On June 23, news emerged that Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce took a jab at the Los Angeles Lakers while celebrating his former team’s championship. Speaking about the Lakers’ victory in the NBA Season Championship last year, Pierce stated, “If we won the Season Championship, we wouldn’t hang a banner in our arena. Let the Lakers do it. Maybe we’d make a carpet out of it for the hallway or something.” The Lakers raised a banner in their arena on December 19, 2023, after defeating the Indiana Pacers in the Season Championship final on December 10, marking the first such title in NBA history. However, their championship run didn’t translate into a deeper playoff run in the 2023-24 season, as they were eliminated in the first round by the Denver Nuggets.
The Celtics, on the other hand, defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals to secure their 18th championship, the most in NBA history. Previously tied with the Lakers for the most titles (17 apiece), the Celtics now stand alone at the top. Among those 18 trophies, one was contributed by Pierce when he led the team to their 17th championship in 2008, defeating the Lakers in the Finals. The Lakers returned the favor in 2010, defeating the Celtics in the Finals.
Despite being over a decade since he last played for the Celtics, Pierce clearly hasn’t forgotten his battles with the Lakers and couldn’t resist taking a playful shot at them.
