No Significant Moves for Lakers and Warriors: Is There Still Hope for the New Season?

No Significant Moves for Lakers and Warriors: Is There Still Hope for the New Season?

Since the NBA free agency began on July 1st, two days have passed without notable actions from the Lakers and the Warriors. Let’s examine their recent moves.

Starting with the Lakers, they drafted sharpshooter Knecht and the highly anticipated Bronny James in the draft. Russell announced his intention to exercise his player option, but the Lakers are planning to trade him. LeBron James, the team’s star, has reportedly been open to a pay cut to allow the Lakers to sign a mid-level contract.

The Lakers extended a 4-year, $32 million deal to promising youngster Christie. Apart from that, no other moves have been made. Rumored targets like Valanciunas (3 years, $30 million with Wizards), Harden (2 years, $70 million staying with Clippers), and Thompson (3 years, $50 million in a sign-and-trade to Mavericks) slipped away. The Lakers’ potential pursuit of DeRozan and the final details of LeBron’s contract will be interesting to follow.

Over at the Warriors, they unsurprisingly let Paul go, as he signed a one-year deal worth over $11 million with the Spurs. Then, news broke that Thompson would join the Mavericks via a sign-and-trade for $50 million over three years, officially signaling the end of the Splash Brothers era and the Warriors becoming a non-taxpayer team. Following this, Melton is set to join Golden State for $12.8 million on a one-year deal, which is a decent addition.

These are the current standings for both teams. With the free agency window still open, we’ll keep an eye on any further developments.
