On July 3, it was reported that the Los Angeles Lakers have offered a guaranteed multi-year rookie contract to LeBron James’ son, Bronny James.
Earlier, the Lakers also organized a team press conference for Bronny and newly drafted Dalton Knecht. LeBron was present at the event.
Speaking about signing with the Lakers, Bronny said, “It’s all surreal, I’m trying to take it all in. I’m very grateful for everything (Coach) JJ (Redick) and (GM) Rob (Pelinka) have given me, and I’m excited to get to work here.”
Looking ahead to the new season, Bronny remarked, “As a guard, I’m a little bigger. So, I think I can take on that role of guarding taller guys. I’ve always taken pride in my defense, especially because it leads to better offensive opportunities.”
If there are no unexpected moves in the off-season, LeBron and Bronny will become the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA game. Addressing the added pressure, Bronny stated, “There’s definitely going to be more pressure. I’ve seen it – social media, the internet, talking about how I might not deserve this opportunity. But, you know, I’ve been dealing with things like this my whole life. So, it’s nothing different, it’ll just be amplified. But I’ll push through it.”
Redick emphasized that Bronny earned his spot in the NBA.
“Rob and I didn’t give Bronny anything,” Redick said. “Bronny earned this opportunity; he earned it through hard work. His feel for the game, athleticism, defense, shooting, passing – there’s a lot to like about his game. He has a great chance to be a really good NBA player.” Redick also mentioned the team’s surprise at drafting Knecht at pick 17: “We didn’t expect him to be available at 17. He brings something we didn’t have – he’s a mobile shooter.”
