Block Party! Zhang Ziyu Dominates Inside, Unstoppable as the “Female Yao Ming”

On June 25th, China’s U18 women’s basketball team defeated New Zealand 90-68 in the Asian Championship, securing their second consecutive win in the group stage.

In this match, China’s top prospect Zhang Ziyu continued her unstoppable performance. She shot 16 out of 20 from the field and 4 out of 7 from the free throw line, finishing with 36 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks, contributing a +32 in plus-minus. In the first quarter, Zhang quickly found her rhythm. However, in the second quarter, facing New Zealand’s defense, China struggled to find answers, allowing the score to tighten. But after halftime, China adjusted, making Zhang move more to receive passes, and she scored consistently in the third quarter, helping her team pull away decisively. Ultimately, Zhang notched a 30-point game and was subbed out early.

From the game, it was evident that Zhang’s height advantage was a dominant factor at the U18 level. However, her reliance on teammates for passes posed additional demands on China’s other players. In the third group game, against Japan for the group’s top spot, Zhang’s performance will remain crucial.
