Xinjiang Men’s Basketball Official Announcement: Liu Wei Appointed as Head Coach After Thorough Consultation with the Club

Today, the Xinjiang Men’s Basketball team officially announced that Liu Wei has been appointed as the head coach of the Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers Iliet Basketball Team.

Welcome Coach Liu Wei! After thorough consultation between our club and Coach Liu Wei himself, we are pleased to announce that he will assume the position of head coach for the Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers Iliet Basketball Team effective immediately.

Liu Wei was born on January 15, 1980. He played in the CBA league for 22 seasons and was selected for the All-Star team 13 times. As a starting guard, he represented the Chinese national men’s basketball team in three World Championships, three Olympics, three Asian Games, and four Asian Championships. After retiring in 2019, he served as the Shanghai Men’s Basketball team’s assistant coach, interim head coach, and youth team coach, and was an assistant coach for the Chinese national youth team since 2022.

The Xinjiang Guanghui Basketball Club has always been dedicated to nurturing talent for Chinese basketball and aims to provide opportunities and platforms for the next generation of young coaches. With his experience in world-class tournaments, Liu Wei possesses ample domestic and international competition experience. As a coach, he has continued to learn and improve under the tutelage of renowned coaches, demonstrating the vigor and determination of a young coach.

Liu Wei played for the Xinjiang Men’s Basketball team from 2014 to 2016, contributing to the team while forging strong bonds with the management, players, and staff. Upon learning of the team’s challenges, Coach Liu Wei stepped up promptly, displaying the spirit of responsibility and genuine affection for the Xinjiang team as both a young coach and an old friend.

Lastly, we extend our sincere gratitude to the Shanghai Sports Bureau, Shanghai Jiuyi Basketball Club, and relevant departments for their tremendous support!
