June 29 update: According to renowned sports journalist Tomer Azarly, James Harden is poised to re-sign with the Los Angeles Clippers. However, Russell Westbrook is not expected to return.
Azarly reported that, “League sources tell us that as of Friday morning, despite George’s situation being at the forefront, Harden is expected to rejoin the Clippers in free agency. George’s negotiations are not anticipated to impact those between Harden and the Clippers. Westbrook is not expected to be back in a Clippers uniform next season, with reports suggesting Russell is considering other options, including playing time and opportunities. There have also been indications that the Clippers have interest in point guards Chris Paul and Kyle Lowry, which could further signal their intent to move on from Westbrook.”
The Clippers are currently dealing with the Paul George situation, as he holds a player option for next season. He could decline it to become a free agent or exercise it and request a trade. The Clippers haven’t offered George the money he desires, sources told Hoops Wire. The Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and Houston Rockets have shown interest in acquiring George, though the forward has expressed his unwillingness to leave the team.
In the 2023-24 season, Harden averaged 16.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 8.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game, shooting 42.8% from the field, 38.1% from three-point range, and 87.8% from the free-throw line.
