Today, China’s 3×3 basketball team sets off for Paris. At the send-off ceremony, Yao Ming, chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, delivered a final pep talk.
Yao Ming said:
“This preparation period has been our most special one yet, being the shortest outside of the actual Olympic competition time. Firstly, we must be clear about who we represent. We’ve organized so many teams and participated in countless matches; on the court, we’ve represented ourselves, our families, our schools, and our clubs. Today, we stand here representing our nation on the Olympic stage, something every athlete dreams of. Secondly, don’t forget that this opportunity is the result of everyone’s efforts. There are those present here, and also those who aren’t, but who have contributed by competing in ranking matches. You represent them too, carrying the dreams of those teammates who couldn’t make it to the Olympics. On the court, you’re not just fighting for yourselves, but also for those teammates with Olympic dreams. Keep them in your minds, as they will give you strength. Don’t underestimate the courage and determination of our opponents. As we send you off today, their national associations might be doing the same for their teams. Their Olympic chances were also earned through hard work. Never underestimate any opponent’s resolve to win. Always be fully prepared before each game.”
