July 25th Update: The New York Knicks have agreed to a three-year extension with their head coach, Tom Thibodeau, signifying that he will remain at the helm of the team until at least the 2027-28 season.
Thibodeau was appointed as the Knicks’ head coach in 2020, having previously served as an assistant coach for the team from 1996 to 2003.
Thibodeau is the third NBA team he has coached for, having previously led the Chicago Bulls (2010-2015) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (2016-2019). Over his 13-season coaching career, Thibodeau boasts a total record of 527 wins and 389 losses (win rate of 57.5%) and a playoff record of 38 wins and 47 losses (win rate of 44.7%).
The Knicks’ decision to renew Thibodeau’s contract was a natural progression, considering his teams’ best performances over the past two decades.
Thibodeau has been awarded the NBA Coach of the Year title twice and led the Knicks to a 50 wins and 32 losses record last season, ranking second in the Eastern Conference.
The Knicks have advanced to the conference semi-finals in the last two seasons, while between 2001 and 2022, they only won one playoff series. Thibodeau ranks fifth in Knicks history for victories with 175, and under his leadership, the team has made the playoffs in three out of four seasons.
Statistically, the Knicks were among the four teams last season that ranked in the top ten for both offensive and defensive efficiency, alongside the Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Denver Nuggets.
