On September 13, the Miami Heat officially announced that they will unveil a statue of Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade at their home court on October 27 (local time).
Earlier, the Heat posted on their social media account: “The best player in our team’s history is about to receive the highest honor in basketball. Join us to witness the unveiling ceremony of the Wade statue.”
In January this year, Pat Riley, President of the Heat, stated in an announcement: “When we retired Wade’s jersey in February 2020, I said he would always be the symbol of this team, and I meant it. His legacy goes beyond the Miami Heat, and I can’t think of a better way to honor his greatness than with a statue.”
The Dwyane Wade statue was designed by the Fine Art Studio Rotblatt Amrany, which has previously created statues for several retired NBA superstars, including the iconic “Michael Jordan” statue in Chicago, as well as statues for Shaquille O’Neal, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Wade was selected by the Heat in 2003 and made the All-Rookie team. He was selected to the All-Star team 13 times and led the Heat to their first NBA championship in 2006, winning the Finals MVP. After teaming up with LeBron James and Chris Bosh in 2010, he helped the Heat win back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013.
During his 15 seasons with the Heat, Wade averaged 22.7 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game. He was also named one of the 75 greatest players in NBA history for the league’s 75th anniversary and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
