Why did the Chinese Men’s Basketball Team Lose? Guo Shiqiang Points to Low Free Throw Percentage as a Recurring Issue

On September 18, China’s men’s basketball team lost a friendly match to Joventut by 5 points. After the game, Guo Shiqiang, the head coach of the Chinese men’s basketball team, spoke to the media, summarizing the reasons for the loss. Besides commenting on the consecutive mistakes made in the final moments, he also highlighted issues with free throw accuracy.

Coach Guo Shiqiang stated:

Although we lost this game, our entire team’s attitude and fighting spirit were commendable. Every player who took the court today performed well in these aspects. The loss can be attributed to three main factors: numerous turnovers in the last three minutes, insufficient focus and execution, and an extremely low free throw percentage.

In this match, Joventut had a three-point shooting percentage of only 25%, often relying on strong inside attacks and fast breaks for scoring. For most of the game, both teams were neck and neck. However, in the final moments, the Chinese team committed three critical turnovers that allowed their opponents to pull ahead. The team’s free throw percentage was a mere 61.5%, and their three-point shooting percentage stood at 21.7%. These shooting issues have become a recurring problem.

The team recorded a total of 14 assists throughout the game, with Hu Mingxuan contributing 11 of them, playing a significant role.
