Recently, former WBA Super/IBF/WBO heavyweight champion “Dr. Steelhammer” Wladimir Klitschko’s ex-trainer Jonathan Banks discussed the distinct fighting styles of the Klitschko brothers.
Jonathan Banks stated, “The Klitschko brothers had very different styles. Vitali Klitschko (45-2, 41 KOs) was more of a power-punching fighter who would go all out and not worry about where his punches landed. For Vitali, there was no such thing as a perfect punch; any shot he threw felt perfect to him. Wladimir Klitschko (64-5, 53 KOs), on the other hand, would look for the best moment to land the heaviest punch. Vitali would just keep chasing you down.”
Banks initially served as Wladimir’s assistant coach and later became his head coach after the passing of Emanuel Steward. Following Wladimir’s retirement, Banks also took on the role of head coach for Gennady Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs).
Banks’ coaching style leaned towards point-fighting, and under his tutelage, Golovkin’s offensive aggression notably decreased while his defense and footwork improved.
