Hearn Talks Pacquiao's Bid for WBC Welterweight Title

Recently, British boxing promoter Eddie Hearn addressed the media regarding former eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s (62-8-2, 39 KOs) return to the ring to challenge for the WBC welterweight world title.

Recently, WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán had approved Pacquiao’s bout against interim WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios (29-2, 18 KOs) for the full 147-pound championship. The 45-year-old Pacquiao is expected to fight again in November.

Said Hearn, “Many people say Pacquiao shouldn’t be fighting anymore. I think it’s hard to guess his current level until we see him in an actual fight. Pacquiao isn’t the fighter he once was, but perhaps he could beat a large majority of the current welterweights, excluding the top 15 or 20. It has been a long time since he was active, so is it appropriate for him to come back and immediately fight for a world title? I’m not sure. But if Pacquiao feels sharp and believes it’s the right move, why not give it a try.”

Pacquiao’s last outing was in August 2021, when he lost a points decision to then-WBA welterweight super champion Yordenis Ugas (27-6, 12 KOs). Pacquiao lost gracefully, as Ugas is not known for his aggression or power. Barrios, who previously defeated Ugas by decision, also doesn’t have a particularly heavy punch, so even if Pacquiao doesn’t succeed, he likely won’t suffer a devastating loss.
