Recently, former world middleweight boxing king Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) told the media that he is still maintaining his training and doesn’t want to officially announce his retirement. Golovkin was recently elected as the chairman of the Kazakh Olympic Committee, marking his entry into politics.
Gennady Golovkin said, “Life with boxing and without it is different, and I’m grateful for having a warm family. I’ve shifted my focus to my loved ones. So leaving boxing isn’t as difficult or impactful for me. I don’t have time to dwell on the differences. Actually, I haven’t completely left boxing; I often train and stay in good shape. I don’t feel like my boxing career has ended. I’m not certain if I’ve already retired. In fact, I’m not much of a talkative, PR-savvy person, as I grew up in the East. What I want to say is that I am currently happy, healthy, and enjoying my life at the moment.”
The 42-year-old Golovkin had an impressive record of 42 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, with 37 of those victories coming by way of knockout. He was a three-belt super champion in the WBC, WBA, and IBF middleweight divisions, defeating the likes of Jacobs, Derevyanchenko, and Lemieux, and drawing with Canelo Álvarez. Although he achieved fame relatively late, he had already reached his peak at an age when many boxers are considered past their prime.
