Canelo Álvarez, Jermall Charlo Close to Agreement

According to Mexican journalist Salvador Rodríguez, unified world champion Canelo Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is nearing a deal with former IBO super-middleweight titlist Chris Eubank Jr. (33-3, 24 KOs).

The 34-year-old Eubank Jr., with a record of 33 wins and three losses, with 34 knockouts, is currently ranked second by BOXREC at 160 pounds, just behind Jermall Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs). Standing at 1.80 meters tall with a reach of 1.84 meters, Eubank Jr. fought twice in 2023, getting stopped in four rounds by former WBO super-welterweight champion Liam Smith in January before avenging that defeat with a tenth-round TKO in September.

A month shy of turning 34, Álvarez holds a record of 61 wins, two losses, and two draws, with 39 knockouts. In May, he outpointed former WBO super-welterweight titlist Jaime Munguía (43-1, 34 KOs) over 12 rounds. If he secures another title defense later this year, a showdown with Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) is expected in early 2025.

For his next bout, Álvarez has two potential opponents in the pipeline: Jermall Charlo and Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs). Charlo has had a low fight frequency in recent years and is likely past his prime, while Berlanga is considered at best a second-tier fighter who has primarily faced lesser opposition.

Álvarez’s choice of opponents in the last couple of years has been disappointing, particularly his continued refusal to face David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs).
