This afternoon, current WBO/The Ring junior welterweight champion, American Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs), dominated Mexican challenger Steve Claggett (38-7-1, 26 KOs) over 12 rounds with scorecards of 120-108, 120-108, and 119-109, successfully defending his title for the second time in the division.
After the fight, Teofimo’s father and head coach, Old Lopez, commented, “Everyone saw the power of my son. Claggett is a tough opponent; we knew before the fight that he had never been knocked out and could take Lopez’s heavy punches. We focused on body shots this time. I can’t deny my son, he did well, winning every round. Claggett didn’t win even one round, as the judges’ scores clearly showed. Claggett was constantly throwing punches, and it’s challenging to beat such an opponent. You have to stay sharp against a fighter like him. I’m satisfied with my son’s performance today.”
After losing a controversial decision to George Kambosos Jr. (21-3, 10 KOs) in November 2021, Lopez bypassed a rematch and moved up to the 140-pound division. In his last four fights, Lopez has won by unanimous decision, seemingly transitioning into a points specialist compared to his previous higher KO rate at lightweight.
