Martinez upsets Ioka to become unified super flyweight champion

In a thrilling super flyweight unification bout, Argentine boxer Fernando Martinez (17-0, 9 KOs) defeated four-weight world champion and Japanese legend Naoya Inoue (31-3-1, 16 KOs) over 12 rounds by unanimous decision to claim the IBF and WBO super flyweight world titles.

The match took place in Tokyo, with Inoue fighting in his hometown. Martinez was more aggressive, while Inoue showcased his superior technical skills, focusing on counterattacks and body shots. However, Martinez demonstrated exceptional stamina, maintaining a relentless offensive throughout the bout, weathering Inoue’s body punches and landing combinations effectively. The two fighters exchanged blows non-stop from the first round until the end of the twelfth, making for an exhilarating spectacle. Ultimately, all three judges scored the fight in favor of Martinez with tallies of 116-112, 117-111, and 120-108.

With this victory, the 32-year-old Fernando Martinez improves his professional record to an undefeated 17 wins, with 9 of those victories coming by way of knockout. He now ranks second in the BoxRec super flyweight rankings, only behind current WBC super flyweight champion and American prospect Jesse Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KOs).
