Recently, former world-renowned light heavyweight champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver spoke to the media about Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) challenging former pound-for-pound king Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs).
Tarver said, “Teofimo Lopez is a beast. Boxers often like to challenge themselves, and many times, the big guys don’t have as much confidence in themselves as fans do. That’s why these fights need to happen. You never know what will happen until you step into the ring. Both Crawford and Lopez are technically excellent, and only a fight will determine who the winner is. Many fans believe that Lopez overestimates his abilities, but I encourage Lopez to do so. I want to see them both compete.”
The 26-year-old Teofimo Lopez recently stated that he hopes to move up to 147 pounds to battle Crawford. However, Crawford will be challenging for the WBA 154-pound world title on August 3rd, and the 147-pound division is a chapter closed for him, especially after his strong TKO win against Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KOs) in seven rounds last July 9th.
If Crawford secures the 154-pound world title, his next target could be boxing’s biggest money-maker, Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs). At 36 years old, Crawford is no longer interested in giving opportunities to young prospects but instead wants to engage in lucrative fights before hanging up his gloves.
