Ukrainian former WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs) told the media today that in his fight against David Benavídez (29-0, 24 KOs) last Sunday, Benavídez was constantly adjusting his tactics, which was a key reason why he couldn’t secure a victory.
Gvozdyk said, “Unfortunately, the fight didn’t go as I had hoped. I could have pushed harder and performed better earlier, but David Benavídez was consistently adapting his approach and style. Sometimes things don’t work out as planned, but I’ll keep pushing forward. Congratulations to David Benavídez for his win and a great bout.”
The 37-year-old Gvozdyk fought more cautiously this time, only starting to apply pressure in the final rounds, indicating that he may be past his prime. Benavídez is now leaning towards returning to the super middleweight division to vie for the WBC super middleweight title for the third time.
At 175 pounds, fighters like Bivol (23-0, 12 KOs) and Beterbiev (20-0, 20 KOs) are clearly a cut above the competition at 168 pounds. After facing Gvozdyk, Benavídez might have realized it would be challenging to make significant strides in the light heavyweight division.
