Davis and Frank-Martin Post-Fight Interviews

This afternoon, WBA lightweight champion and three-division world titlist Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28 KOs), from the United States, lived up to expectations by knocking out Francisco “The Ghost” Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) in the eighth round at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, securing his first victory of 2024.

Davis’ last fight was on April 7th, 2023, when he defeated Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) in seven rounds. Prior to that, he had been out of the ring for 14 months.

In his post-fight interview, Davis said, “Yeah, I felt a bit rusty getting in the ring, the first two rounds I felt like I didn’t get fully warmed up. I did warm up before the fight, but I still felt a little rusty. No excuses, though. In the end, my left hook, my killer punch, finished Martin. I started boxing at seven, had my first fight at eight – boxing is second nature to me. As long as I focus on boxing, I always find a way to win.”

Regarding a potential next opponent, Vasiliy Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs), Davis stated, “Am I ready for a big fight against Lomachenko? Absolutely. I’m ready to fight anyone. I just want to put on a great show.”

Francisco Martin commented, “I felt like I was controlling the pace early on, but then I got a little too relaxed. I got too comfortable on the ropes, tried to land a big shot, and didn’t move enough, which allowed Davis to catch me with a hard punch. I didn’t see it coming.”

At present, Davis has not confirmed his next opponent, with Lomachenko and Shakur Stevenson (21-0, 10 KOs) both in the running. However, Lomachenko is considered the more cost-effective option.
