“Tank” Davis, Martin Make Weight for Sunday’s Battle

This morning, WBA lightweight regular champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) and lightweight prospect Frank “The Ghost” Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) weighed in at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas ahead of their showdown on Sunday. On June 16 (this Sunday) at noon Beijing time, the two will contest a scheduled 12-round lightweight bout, with Davis defending his WBA world title at 135 pounds for the fifth time. Davis weighed in at 133.4 pounds, while Martin came in at 134.4 pounds, both making weight successfully.

The 29-year-old Gervonta Davis boasts an unblemished professional record of 29 wins with 27 knockouts. Standing at 5’6″ with a reach of 67 inches, Davis last fought in April last year, stopping former WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) in seven rounds. The Showtime PPV event drew 1.2 million buys, netting both fighters over $40 million each. Recognized for his power, technique, and speed, Davis is currently ranked eighth on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list. He has previously knocked out Gamboa, Santa Cruz, Barrios, and Romero, and outpointed Isaac Cruz, potentially positioning himself as boxing’s next superstar.

Also 29 years old, Frank Martin holds an undefeated record of 18 wins with 12 knockouts and is currently ranked eighth by BoxRec at 135 pounds. Standing at 5’8″ with a reach of 68 inches, Martin fights from the southpaw stance and was once considered one of the most promising prospects in the lightweight division. However, his performance in July last year against Aram Avagyan (12-1, 7 KOs), an Armenian-German boxer, was underwhelming. Heading into this fight, the odds are 1-5 in favor of Davis, who is widely favored to emerge victorious.
