According to recent media reports, former WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) has been arrested by the Beverly Hills Police Department for allegedly causing approximately $15,000 worth of damage to hotel property, resulting in a vandalism charge.
Garcia later complained about his mental health issues and has since been taken to a mental health facility for further evaluation and treatment.
In a statement from Garcia’s legal team, it was mentioned that Garcia has openly discussed his struggles with mental health in recent years and has been under significant psychological stress lately due to a positive drug test before his recent fight.
The 25-year-old boxer defeated Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) via a points decision on April 21, but, having weighed in overweight and by 3.4 pounds, he was ineligible for the WBC’s 140-pound title. A subsequent positive drug test from a post-fight sample could potentially lead to the outcome being overturned. Golden Boy Promotions is still attempting to arrange a match between Garcia and current WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez (20-1, 13 KOs).
