Benavidez Awaits the Best Version of Gvozdyk

Recently, WBC super middleweight interim champion David Benavídez (28-0, 24 KOs) expressed to the media his anticipation for a showdown against the strongest version of Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs) this Sunday, as they vie for the vacant WBC light heavyweight interim title.

David Benavídez stated, “This is a massive opportunity for me, and fans are fortunate to witness two power punchers like us in action on the same night. Gvozdyk is a tough opponent, and I’m 100% focused on this fight. Whatever it takes, I’ll be ready. My only thought right now is the battle on June 15th; the training has been intense. I expect the co-main event to be even more exciting than the main event. If I believed Gvozdyk was past his prime, injured, or not the same fighter he once was, I wouldn’t bring my A-game. I’m preparing for Gvozdyk as the strongest, fastest, and most challenging opponent of my career so far. The actual fight might play out differently – maybe I’ll knock him out easily in just two rounds – but I want to be at my peak performance level.”

Bookmakers currently favor Benavídez at 1-5 odds. Gvozdyk’s sole defeat came in October 2019 when he was TKO’d by Artur Beterbiev (20-0, 20 KOs) in the 10th round, although two judges had him ahead on points through the first nine rounds. Following that loss, Gvozdyk briefly contemplated retirement due to business failures and financial issues before returning to the ring in February 2023 with three tune-up fights. At 37 years old, Gvozdyk is a decade older than Benavídez.
