Summary of Chinese Players’ Performance in the First Round of Wimbledon: Zhang Zhizhen Advances, Zheng Qinwen Upset

On July 1st, several matches took place in the first round of Wimbledon, with nine Chinese players in action. Here is a breakdown of their performances:

Men’s Singles:

Shang Junzheng defeated Chilean star Garin 3-0, securing the first main-draw win for a Chinese mainland male singles player at Wimbledon. Shang will face 10th seed Dimitrov in the next round.

Zhang Zhizhen also won in straight sets, 3-0 against Jarry. With this victory, Zhang has now won in the main draw of all four Grand Slams, becoming the first Chinese mainland men’s tennis player to achieve this feat. Zhang’s next opponent will be Struff.

Women’s Singles:

Zhu Lin defeated Romanian Begu 2-0. This was Zhu’s second singles victory at Wimbledon. She will play Pavlyuchenkova in the next round.

Zhang Shuai lost 0-2 to Kasatkina, extending her losing streak across seasons to 21 matches.

Yuan Ye lost 0-2 to Dutch player Rus. This marked Yuan’s third appearance in the Wimbledon singles main draw but she exited in the first round once again.

Wang Yafan narrowly beat Slovakian Schmiedlova 2-1, ending a five-year drought without a Wimbledon win.

Zheng Qinwen surprisingly fell 1-2 to Chinese-American qualifier LuLu Sun, exiting in the first round of Wimbledon for the second consecutive year.

Wang Xiyu lost a tough 1-2 battle against Vekic, bowing out in the first round of Wimbledon for the third straight year. She is yet to secure a singles victory at the tournament in her career.
