According to French newspaper L’Equipe, despite Didier Deschamps’ contract with the French Football Federation (FFF) running until 2026, his position as head coach could be under threat should France not overcome Belgium in the upcoming quarter-final match.
Deschamps has been at the helm of the French national team since 2012, building a formidable era for Les Bleus. Following the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he extended his contract with the FFF, which is set to expire in 2026. It was widely rumored that his relationship with FFF President Noel Le Graët was particularly strong, with Le Graët repeatedly stating that Deschamps’ position would remain secure even in the case of a disappointing performance in the UEFA Euro tournament.
In an interview with L’Equipe, Le Graët said, “Even if France doesn’t make it to the semi-finals, no, I don’t think his position would be in jeopardy. One reason is that his contract with the FFF runs until 2026.”
However, the reality might be different. As per L’Equipe’s sources, Deschamps’ 2018 World Cup victory has provided him with a significant amount of goodwill, which he is now reportedly exhausting. Furthermore, his relationship with the new president, Le Graët’s successor, is not as solid as reported, and it was the previous president who negotiated the latest extension of Deschamps’ contract.
If France fails to progress past Belgium in the quarter-finals, in reality, Deschamps’ position will face significant challenges. Even if France reaches the semi-finals, questions about his future could still arise.
