On June 30th, the entire Italian men’s football team, eliminated from the competition, flew back to Italy from Germany. Gianluigi Buffon, a legendary goalkeeper and part of the coaching staff, gave a brief interview at the airport.
Commenting on Italy’s elimination, Buffon said, “We didn’t start the game as we had hoped. Now, the focus must be on securing a spot in the World Cup, and that is absolutely the minimum expectation. Compared to recent years, we need effective improvements.”
When asked if the team lacked talent, Buffon replied, “I don’t think so.”
Italy has now missed out on the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Their last World Cup goal was scored by Mario Balotelli against England in 2014.
