Confident Berhalter: Despite Copa America Exit, I’m Still the Right Coach for USMNT

On July 2nd, the final round of Group C in the Copa America concluded with hosts USA losing 0-1 to Uruguay, thus eliminating them from the tournament. Following the match, US head coach Gregg Berhalter spoke to the media, asserting that he remains the right choice for the team’s coaching role.

In the post-match press conference, when asked if he was still the suitable candidate to lead the US men’s national soccer team to the 2026 World Cup, Berhalter simply replied, “Yes!”

“Look at the expressions on the players’ faces in the locker room, the mood of the staff and players – we’re very disappointed with the result,” he said. “We know we’re capable of more, and we didn’t show it in this game. It’s as simple as that.”

Berhalter took over as the US manager again in June 2023, with his contract including the 2026 World Cup, which the USA will co-host with Canada and Mexico. Despite having players like Pulisic, McKennie, and Adams in the squad, the USMNT failed to replicate their previous Copa America performance, where they lost to Argentina in the semi-finals back in 2016.
