On July 3, German football legend Lothar Matthaus wrote a column for Mundo Deportivo.
Matthaus praised Spanish player Yamal: “What Yamal is doing is simply remarkable. He’s barely 17 years old and yet so young and intelligent. I’m happy for my friend Hansi Flick, who will work with Yamal at Barcelona next season.”
However, Matthaus expressed his preference for Jamal Musiala: “Musiala has been fantastic. I’m not saying he’s better than Yamal, but I believe he’s more mature. I prefer Musiala, not just because he’s German, but due to his individual abilities. As a number 10, Musiala poses a greater threat than Yamal, and let’s not forget, he’s already scored three goals in this Euro tournament.”
Notably, Matthaus also commented on Nico Williams’ future at Athletic Bilbao: “On the Spanish left flank, there’s Nico Williams, who is unbelievably fast. Before the Euros, he was under the radar, but now his value is immeasurable. It will be difficult for Bilbao to keep him for long.”
