The German national football team has adopted an unusual tactic at their training base in Herzogenaurach to counter potential “spying” – by blasting 1980s pop hits and cartoon theme tunes to mask tactical instructions from head coach Julian Nagelsmann, according to reports.
As Bild newspaper revealed, when journalists approached the site on Wednesday, they found two men playing children’s TV show jingles and a song by an 80s pop group to disrupt any eavesdropping attempts.
The extreme measure aims to prevent the team’s strategies from falling into the wrong hands.
As hosts of the tournament, Germany has installed double fences around their training ground and used tall canvases for additional cover, with security personnel and mounted police patrolling the area to ensure the safety of their preparations. With Spain being Germany’s toughest challenge so far, and both teams seen as strong contenders for the title, Nagelsmann is taking no chances.
This is not the first time Nagelsmann has dealt with a “spy” incident, having experienced something similar during his time coaching Bayern Munich. The German national team has been vigilant against spying threats in recent years, especially after their surprise defeat to Japan in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, which led to their elimination.
In this home Euro championship, Germany has performed impressively, topping Group A and defeating Denmark 2-0 in the round of 16. They now face a Spain side that has won all four of its matches so far, setting the stage for an enthralling clash.
