Toni Kroos: I'm Very Sad Today, We Wanted to Stay Here LongerOn July 6th, in the quarterfinals of the European Championship, Spain knocked out host Germany in extra time with a 2-1 victory. After the match, a disappointed Toni Kroos spoke to the media.

Full of disappointment, regret, and unfulfilled ambition, Kroos said, “We all put everything into this game to avoid losing. We were very close to achieving that. We had a shared grand goal. Now that dream is shattered, and I feel deeply saddened. Even though we may realize in the coming days that we played a great match, it’s still painful when you’re so close to advancing to the next round.”

In his closing remarks, he expressed his best wishes for the future of the German team. He stated, “If I can contribute in any way, I am happy about it. At least in German football, we have taken another step forward with the ambition and vision to get better. I believe this team will do that in the future as well. But today, we are very sad; we wanted to stay here for a bit longer.”

This match marked the final game of Kroos’s career. Before the tournament, the legendary player had already decided to retire from international football after the Euros to focus on running his football academy.
