Barcelona Football Club has recently been dealt a significant blow with the young midfield prodigy Pedri getting injured during the 2024 European Championship match against Germany. This incident not only impacted the Spanish national team but also deeply concerned Barcelona. However, amidst the setback, the club might find some financial relief, as per FIFA and UEFA regulations, allowing them to seek compensation to mitigate the losses incurred due to the player’s prolonged absence.
According to FIFA rules, when a player sustains an injury during an international match that keeps them out for more than 28 days, their club is entitled to compensation. This mechanism aims to protect clubs’ interests since injuries sustained during national team duty can lead to clubs losing key players for the subsequent season. For a player like Pedri, whose importance to Barcelona is immense, the club’s loss is considerable; however, economically, they can find some solace through the claims process.
Reports indicate that the maximum compensation for each case can be up to 7.5 million euros, with the exact amount calculated based on the player’s actual days of absence, at a rate of 20,548 euros per day, up to a maximum of 365 days. Thus, if Pedri’s recovery period is extended, Barcelona could receive a substantial indemnity.
As per Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has 28 days from the player’s injury to file a claim with FIFA or UEFA. In Pedri’s case, starting from his injury on June 5th, the club could initiate the compensation process as early as August 2nd. Previously, Barcelona successfully claimed compensation for Gavi’s injury during a national team game, indicating the club’s familiarity with the claims procedure.
Pedri suffered a severe knee injury in the match against Germany, forcing him off the pitch just eight minutes into the game, setting a record for the fastest substitution in Euro history. Diagnosed with a torn ligament in his left knee, he is expected to be out for nearly two months, ruling him out for the remainder of the tournament.
