Makoto Hasebe: We want to prove that the Japanese team can win a medal without overage players

The Japan Football Association has officially announced its squad for the Paris Olympics, and for the first time since the 2008 Beijing Games, no overage players have been included in the team.

However, both head coach Masatada Iwata and forward Makoto Hasebe expressed confidence that the team can secure a medal in this tournament without relying on overage players.

Iwata commented, “Given various constraints, we have selected the best 18 players and four reserves from the U23 age group. These are the most outstanding players currently available, and they represent our strongest options. Although the absence of overage players reflects the challenges of selection, the team will continue to strive forward.”

Hasebe stated, “We want to demonstrate that we can achieve this (winning a medal) without the presence of overage players.”
