Emma Raducanu, the former US Open champion, scraped through her first-round match at Wimbledon. After the match, Raducanu compared her victory to England’s unattractive win in the Euro Cup, leaving David Beckham, watching from the stands, with a wry smile.
Raducanu is a mixed-race Chinese and Romanian, born in Toronto, Canada. At age 12, she was recruited by the British Tennis Association and has represented the UK ever since. In 2021, she reached the Wimbledon Round of 16 as a wildcard entrant and then stunned everyone by winning the US Open without dropping a set, becoming the first qualifier in the Open Era to claim a Grand Slam title.
This year’s Wimbledon marks her return after a two-year absence. In her opening match, she had to fight through a first-set tiebreak before defeating world No. 98, Sara Zidansek, in straight sets, making for a nervy start to her campaign.
In an interview, Raducanu admitted, “I was a bit nervous today, but I got the job done. To be honest, it was an ugly win, but just like England’s 2-1 victory over Slovakia last night, a win is a win.”
Notably, football legend David Beckham was in attendance to watch Raducanu’s match. Upon hearing her comments, the camera caught Beckham, who could only respond with a resigned smile.
