Ahead of their UEFA Euro quarter-final against England, Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer was spotted training with specialized glasses designed to enhance his reaction speed. In the previous Euros, it was these glasses that helped him save Kylian Mbappé’s penalty against France.
The battery-powered glasses slow down the apparent speed of the ball when flying towards the wearer, effectively training the goalkeeper’s reflexes. Designed by a Japanese company, the glasses cost around £350. Sommer is not alone; backup goalkeeper Gregor Kobel also trains with the same eyewear in preparation for the match against England.
In the last Euros, all Swiss goalkeepers, including Sommer, trained with these glasses, and their effectiveness was evident in the team’s victory over France in the round of 16, where Sommer saved Mbappé’s spot-kick, securing Switzerland’s progression.
The glasses are not limited to football goalkeepers; athletes from other sports, such as tennis and baseball, also use them to enhance their training routines.
Of course, each team has its unique preparation tactics. As Switzerland’s quarter-final opponents, England’s players reportedly drink pickle juice to prevent cramps.
