On July 7th, in the quarterfinals of the Euros, England advanced to the semifinals after a penalty shootout victory over Switzerland. After the match, Arnold spoke to BBC.
In a somewhat dull contest, although Embolo gave Switzerland an early lead, Saka quickly equalized for England with a long-range effort. In extra time, apart from Rice’s ambitious shot and Shaqiri’s near-post corner hitting the frame, there were few notable moments. In the penalty shootout, all five English players converted, with Arnold sealing the win as he stepped up last. BBC journalists caught up with him immediately after.
Arnold commented, “Unbelievable, those goals are a testament to our hard work. We faced a tough opponent, but the team showed our character, belief, mental strength, and spirit. We knew tonight would be intense, and no matter what happened or how we won, getting the victory was crucial.”
Referring to his decisive penalty, he added, “It’s a result of all the practice, the manager said if it came to penalties, I’d be one of the takers. I enjoyed the moment, kept practicing. I knew I had to do my job. All five of our penalties were fantastic.”
