Spanish Media: Koeman’s Stubbornness Pays Off with Trust in Familiar Faces as Netherlands Reach Euro Semifinals

Spanish Media: Koeman's Stubbornness Pays Off with Trust in Familiar Faces as Netherlands Reach Euro Semifinals

On the early hours of July 7th, the Netherlands defeated Turkey 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the European Championship, advancing to the semifinals. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Dutch head coach Ronald Koeman’s unwavering persistence in his trusted players has contributed to his team’s success.

The expanded squad for this Euro allowed teams to bring 26 players, but some coaches didn’t fill all spots. Koeman was initially one of them, only calling up Zirkzee after Brobbey’s injury.

AS explains that Koeman had no desire for a large squad and had a steadfast belief in his core lineup. He relied solely on his own men, showing little faith in others. Of the 23 outfield players on the Dutch roster, Matson, Brobbey, De Ligt, and Gravenberch did not see action, while Blind and Zirkzee only appeared in the closing stages. Blind’s role was to run down the clock, while Zirkzee added aerial presence.

Koeman’s stubbornness proved beneficial, particularly against Turkey, where his trusted players saved the day. Wout Weghorst, for instance, posed constant threats, while Van de Beek crucially denied an opponent scoring opportunity.

Weghorst was preferred over Malen and Zirkzee, who were more versatile, and Van de Beek over Matson, despite the latter’s goal-scoring potential. However, these were mere tactical considerations.

Despite doubts about De Vrij’s starting position, he was named man of the match in the decisive encounter against Turkey, validating Koeman’s judgment.

With almost 25 years of top-flight coaching experience, Koeman’s tactical approach might be hard to grasp, but his conviction has led the Netherlands to the semifinals, where they will face England. His belief in his methods is now being rewarded.
