Sergio Agüero: Argentina's Young Stars Set to Carry the Torch After Messi's Retirement

Legendary Argentine striker Sergio Agüero recently named three players who he believes are poised to take on the mantle after Lionel Messi’s eventual retirement and lead the national team forward.

With Argentina having lifted the World Cup trophy in Qatar in 2022, the team is now eyeing another international accolade, defending their Copa América title. In Group A qualifiers, Argentina has been dominant, defeating Chile, Canada, and Peru, showcasing their strength.

Throughout this journey, forward Lautaro Martínez has emerged as a key figure, scoring four goals in three matches, stealing the spotlight. In contrast, Messi, at 37 years old, has yet to find the back of the net in this tournament, providing only one assist, suggesting a possible decline in form.

Given Messi’s advancing age, his time with the national team is undoubtedly winding down. Agüero, a former teammate and close friend, has identified three potential future leaders.

In an interview, Agüero said, “For me, the future leaders of Argentina will be Julián Álvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Enzo Fernández.” He added, “Some mention Emiliano Martínez, but goalkeepers have a unique role, they lead in their own way.”

Notably, these three promising young talents have an average age of just 24 and all currently play for Premier League giants, highlighting the ongoing abundance of talent in Argentine football. With such players potentially taking on more significant roles for the national team, Argentine fans can be confident in the country’s bright future.
