Throughout this Euros, England has persisted with a 4-2-3-1 formation, reaching the quarter-finals despite underwhelming performances. Recently, Klinsmann shared his tactical advice for Southgate in his column for The Sun, suggesting a shift to a 4-4-2 setup.
Klinsmann wrote: As a head coach in major tournaments, you have to trust your instincts. After Spain’s consecutive triumphs (2008-2012), many clubs and nations adopted the 4-2-3-1. However, if it’s not working on the pitch, we must be open to change.
I would recommend that England switch from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2. When I played, I always played in a 4-4-2. There are many benefits to having a partner up front.
Harry Kane has often looked isolated and hasn’t delivered the expected firepower. Ivan Toney should be partnered with Kane as the starting double-forward.
With Switzerland awaiting England in the quarter-finals, it remains to be seen whether Southgate will opt for a change in formation.
