In this year’s Copa América, as the host nation, the US team had a disappointing campaign with one win and two losses, finishing third in their group and exiting early. Manager Berhalter’s position is now under threat. Today, US soccer legend Tim Howard expressed his desire for Jürgen Klopp to take over the national team.
Howard said, “I want to help my national team in any way I can, and I’m proud of my time representing it. If I were in charge of the USSF, I’d be at the airport right away trying to convince Klopp to lead the USMNT. The idea is straightforward – we have a young squad with room to grow, much like Liverpool when he took over. In two years, he could transform the team into a World Cup contender.”
Commenting on the current state of the team, Howard remarked, “Undoubtedly, Berhalter has to shoulder responsibility, that’s just how sports work. But a lot of it falls on the players too. I know this might not be a popular opinion, but I’ve been with the national team for 15 years, and sometimes we’ve performed poorly yet still managed to pull through in crucial matches, even with a subpar coach.”
Nonetheless, Howard insisted that Berhalter’s departure is imminent, and it’s time to find a manager who can maximize the team’s potential.
