On July 10th, in the semi-finals of the European Championship, England is about to face the Netherlands. Pickford gave an interview before the UEFA match.
Talking about the penalty shootout against Switzerland
Pickford: “The English lads did well, they kept scoring penalties to help us maintain our lead. I myself wanted to save more penalties, but the opponents were also excellent, with high-quality shots.”
It’s worth noting that since 2018, Pickford has saved 5 out of 20 penalties faced, helping England win three penalty shootouts. To put this into perspective, from 1990 to 2012, all the goalkeepers in England’s history only managed to save 2 penalties, and lost 6 out of 7 penalty shootouts.
Talking about his animated body language during penalty shootouts
Pickford: “I’m much quieter off the pitch, even somewhat introverted. But once I step onto the field, another Pickford appears, he’s passionate, he’s hyped up, he’s in a good mental state.”
Talking about the pressure of competing against the Netherlands
Pickford: “We’re not afraid of the Dutch team, personally, I enjoy playing under pressure, such an environment makes me thrive, I’ve always been fighting for my dreams. If you don’t love football, if you can’t handle the pressure, then what’s the point of such competition?”
