According to Spanish media outlet Marca, since the official announcement of Mbappe donning the Real Madrid No. 9 jersey, sales of the French superstar’s jerseys have exceeded 7,000 per day, more than double that of Cristiano Ronaldo’s when he first joined. The partnership between Mbappe and Real Madrid is generating commercial value akin to the impact David Beckham had.
Mbappe’s No. 9 jersey comes in two versions: a supporter edition for 120 euros and a player edition for 170 euros. An additional 15 euros is required for the Champions League badge, yet this has not deterred fans’ enthusiasm. Since its release on July 11th, daily sales have surpassed 7,000 units.
Besides the official Real Madrid physical stores, Mbappe’s jersey is also available online. However, only the 3XL size remains in stock, with all other sizes sold out. Real Madrid is at a loss as to when they can restock the other sizes.
In comparison, during Cristiano Ronaldo’s first season after joining in 2009, his jersey sales amounted to over one million pieces, averaging more than 3,300 per day—half of Mbappe’s current sales rate. Moreover, Ronaldo’s jersey was priced at just 80 euros at the time, which, adjusted for inflation, is equivalent to approximately 107 euros today—a figure dwarfed by the value Mbappe brings to Real Madrid.
Spanish media draws parallels between Mbappe’s effect and that of David Beckham’s in his prime. In Beckham’s first half-year with Real Madrid, his jersey sales reached over one million, largely driven by the Asian market. During the same period, the combined jersey sales of all other Real Madrid players did not even reach 700,000. In Beckham’s first two seasons at Real Madrid, the club saw a staggering 60% increase in jersey sales revenue.
