Find Comfort! Marca: Gavi's Injury Nets Barcelona Close to €5 Million in Compensation

According to Spain’s Mundo Deportivo, due to Gavi’s long-term injury, Barcelona will receive nearly €5 million in compensation from FIFA. This is in accordance with FIFA’s player protection policy, which stipulates the compensation that Barcelona is entitled to.

Gavi suffered a serious right knee ligament injury during Spain’s match against Georgia on November 19, 2023. Since then, the 19-year-old midfielder has been out of action and missed the Euro 2024 tournament.

On December 16, 2023, when Gavi had been sidelined for 28 days, FIFA’s club protection policy came into effect, with a maximum compensation amount of €7.5 million per player.

FIFA stipulates that for long-term absences, the daily compensation amount is €20,548, up to a maximum of 365 days. As of August 1, Gavi had been absent for 228 days, meaning Barcelona will receive €4.6 million.

If Gavi is still unable to return to play by November 19 this year, Barcelona will receive €6.9 million from FIFA. In the worst-case scenario, if Gavi does not recover by December 16, 2024, Barcelona will receive €7.5 million—the maximum amount under FIFA’s policy.

However, such a situation is highly unlikely as Gavi’s recovery is progressing well, and he is expected to return to action in October. In addition to Gavi, Barcelona is awaiting FIFA’s handling of Pedri and Lenglet’s cases.
