Recently, Argentina’s Olympic team was defeated 0-1 by the host nation France and eliminated from the competition. Following the match, a fierce conflict erupted between both teams, reportedly sparked by French midfielder Milot deliberately provoking the Argentine bench, leading to the escalation of tensions.
Otamendi, captain of Argentina’s Olympic team and also a member of the 2022 World Cup champions, stated in an interview with TyC Sports after the game: “I told the players that this is how Argentina deals with setbacks. Before becoming world champions, I experienced failure and know the bitterness that comes with it. They did well, but unfortunately, they couldn’t score.”
Regarding Milot’s actions, Otamendi expressed his dissatisfaction: “If he wanted to celebrate, he could have done so against us directly. What happens on the field stays on the field, and we can talk things out. Running over to provoke our families is completely unacceptable.”
It’s worth noting that during the 2022 World Cup, after Argentina eliminated the Netherlands via penalties, Otamendi appeared to make a grimace at Dutch players, although he later explained that it was in response to continuous provocation from the Dutch players.
