July 16 – The Daily Mail reports that just two days before the Euro final, Spain’s coach, De La Fuente, contacted the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) expressing interest in the vacant head coach position for the U.S. team.
In the Euro final, Spain triumphed over England with a 2-1 victory, securing their fourth European championship title. However, according to The Daily Mail, De La Fuente had reached out to the USSF prior to the Euro final to inquire about the head coaching role for the U.S. team. Following their early exit from the group stage as hosts of the recently concluded Copa America, the U.S. team’s head coach, Berhalter, was let go.
De La Fuente’s decision is puzzling given his contract extension with the Spanish Football Federation until 2026. This year, Spain not only won the Euro championship but also played to much acclaim, making them favorites for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America.
It’s understood that after relieving Berhalter of his duties, the USSF approached the recently unemployed former Liverpool manager, Klopp, who declined their offer.
