The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) officially announced that starting from next season, only team captains will be allowed to communicate with referees in all professional and amateur leagues in the Netherlands.
This initiative follows new rules tested at the European Championship and the Olympics, where only the captain is allowed to contest referee decisions. Other players who persistently approach the referee are shown a yellow card. The KNVB believes this upholds sportsmanship on the football pitch and has decided to adopt the rule.
The KNVB stated: Cooperation between the captain and the referee will become more intense. Specifically, this means:
During the match, the referee may explain important decisions when necessary;
The captain takes responsibility for removing teammates from the vicinity of the referee;
Any player ignoring these instructions, approaching the referee unfairly, showing disrespect, or protesting will receive a yellow card.
If the captain is the goalkeeper, another outfield player must be designated to assume this role when the goalkeeper is not close to the referee.
