French Astronaut: Olympic Team Sports Do Not Receive Due Recognition; Medals Should Be Counted Per Player on the Field

Recently, French astronaut Thomas Pesquet stated in an interview that the current Olympic medal tally does not adequately reflect the value of team sports, suggesting that medals should be counted according to the number of players on the team.

Pesquet said, “I have a proposal: team sports at the Olympics should count medals based on the number of athletes on the field. For individual sports, it’s fine to count one gold medal if you win, but for basketball, we should count five gold medals, seven for rugby, and eleven for football!”

“This way, team sports would become more significant globally, especially football, which is the world’s number one sport. Only then can we better recognize the value of these team sports.”

“It’s great to have 37 medals for swimming, which we love, but with 37 medals for swimming and only one for football, I think that’s inappropriate.”
