In a recent appearance, former Brazilian great Romario stated that if Brazil wants to regain its glory, it must build the team around Neymar. Only with Neymar as the core can the Brazilian team rise again; otherwise, they will continue to be humiliated by their opponents.
Prior to the conclusion of the Copa America, Romario had spoken about Brazil’s performance: “Vinicius has shown significant improvement in recent national team matches, and he can help Brazil a lot. But at this stage, if you’re talking about players capable of making Brazil competitive for titles, there’s only Neymar.”
Romario reiterated Neymar’s importance to the current Brazilian team: “Football history is clear – in the 1970s, it was Pelé; in the 1990s, it was Romario; then came Ronaldo. Without building the team around Neymar, Brazil cannot become champions again. It’s as simple as that.”
Despite Dorival Júnior, who took over in January, failing to deliver a decent performance with Brazil in the Copa America, Romario still chooses to trust him: “I support the coach. In any game, the best players should get their chance. If there are good-performing players, you can call them up to the Brazilian team. Of course, every Brazilian fan will have their opinion – that’s football, especially when it comes to the national team. I still believe in him, but I hope he gives better players more opportunities.”
