Witsel said: “In my mind, I am already a center-back. At first, I had to adapt to this new position because it was a new challenge for me, but last season I felt that I performed well in this role.”
Speaking about why the change in position occurred, the Belgian explained: “The reason for this change is that Simeone wants more ball distribution options from the back. As a former midfielder, I can help the team distribute the ball better. I thank Simeone; I have a very good relationship with him, and he is a very straightforward person.”
The 35-year-old Witsel made 35 appearances (30 starts) for Atlético last season, scoring two goals.
