On July 16, according to UK media The Telegraph, Kane will not consider stepping away from international football but instead aims to follow in Messi’s footsteps, hoping to recover from another final defeat with England.
Kane said he was “heartbroken” after Sunday night’s loss to Spain in Berlin, which marked his and England’s second consecutive defeat in a European Championship final. Kane was joint top scorer in this European Championship with three goals, but was substituted in five of England’s seven games, with head coach Southgate admitting that he had not yet reached top form.
This sparked some debate about Kane’s position, with former England international Gary Lineker suggesting the 30-year-old may have lost his spark. However, sources close to Kane completely refute this theory, as well as any suggestion that he might be considering retirement from international duty.
The Telegraph notes that Kane is not considering giving up on his international career and is more likely to emulate Messi. Despite being 37 years old, Messi continues to play for Argentina, having overcome national team disappointments to win the World Cup, two Copa Americas, and the Finalissima.
Kane needs time to rest and recover from another grueling season but is expected to be ready to lead England when the international schedule resumes in September.
