The Paris Olympics are imminent, with the opening ceremony scheduled for this Friday. Competitions will start prior to the ceremony, with Henry’s French Olympic team facing off against the USA in Marseille on Wednesday for their first group match. Platini has stated that he has no intention of following this tournament.
“I’m not interested in the French Olympic football team,” Platini said. “Football doesn’t belong in the Olympics because it’s not an Olympic sport. We bring football because it fills the stadiums. Football attracts the largest crowds.”
Platini, who served as UEFA President from 2007 to 2015, noted that FIFA never wanted the world’s best football players to participate in the Olympics, which means countries can only bring their “B, C, D teams… It’s meaningless.”
Platini emphasized that while the Olympics are a wonderful moment in sports, they are not the most important football competition.
