On July 15, the 34-year-old Mueller announced his retirement from the German national team, using an emotional video to recount his ties with the national side.
Original text of Mueller’s video:
When I made my debut for the German national team 14 years ago, I never imagined everything that would come today.
In the national team, we had great victories and painful defeats; sometimes we were beaten by our opponents, but then we got back up. I played alongside some of the best players in the world, competed with excellent teammates, and experienced many unforgettable moments together.
Today, after 131 appearances and 45 goals for the national team, I am bidding farewell to the German national team.
I was fortunate enough to participate in four World Cups and four European Championships. When I lifted the World Cup trophy, I could feel your passion on the field, which always made me very proud to be able to play for my country. We celebrated together, and at times, shed tears together.
I want to thank all the fans and members of the national team for your support over the past few years. Please carry forward the enthusiasm and joy of this European Championship and continue to cheer for the team on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
I will do so as well, just now as a fan in the stands, rather than a player on the pitch.
Goodbye, we’ll meet again!
